Die Oscars wurden zum ersten Mal am 16.05.1929 im Blossom Room des Hollywood Roosevelt Hotels verliehen. Damals dauerte die Verleihung 15 Minuten und gilt damit bis heute als die kürzeste Oscar-Verleihung aller Zeiten. Die Statue selbst ist ist 34,4 Zentimeter groß. Unter millimeterdünnen 24-Karat-Goldhaut befindet sich ein massiver Nickel-Kupfer-Silber-Leib, der dem Preis zu seinem Gewicht von 4,25 kg verhilft.
